Parental Duty @ The Rugby Club
Hey Mums & Dads of Balerno! Do any of you remember dancing? Yes dancing; to dance on a dance floor!?! Or had you forgotten like this motley crew of local parents (and a token Leither), who had forgotten what it was like to play in a band?
What has been getting in the way? PARENTAL DUTY
And that is the name of this exciting new blues-rock-generally-up-for-it covers band that is going to raise the roof at Currie Rugby Club, who are equally excited about being part of Balerno Music Festival. So put down your nappies, Mums switch off the soaps, Dads hang up your aprons & let’s all dance the night away! (people with grown up children or no kids are also welcome).
Please visit http://fb.me/ParentalDUTY for further details.
Time: 8.00 –12.00 Venue: Currie Rugby Club. Price: £4 per ticket.
The Borders Big Band
This will be the third visit of the Borders Big Band to the Balerno Music Festival in as many years. Based in the Scottish Borders and formed in 1979 by former dance band players and enthusiasts, the band is now in its 38th year. Fielding up to 18 players, its repertoire is largely drawn from the high years of the Swing era, featuring music made famous by bandleaders such as Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington and others. Members travel from many parts of Scotland (including Balerno) to rehearse (often on a weekly basis) and perform with the band.
In the past year the Borders Big band has visited Balerno, Peebles and Melrose, and further performances in the Lothians and Borders are planned for the autumn of 2017. The band has received excellent reviews for recent dates, and this opportunity to hear them should not be missed for all big band and Swing era enthusiasts.
Time: 7.30 – 9.30 Venue: Balerno Parish Church. Price: £10 per adult, £5 per child.

Listen, do you want to know a secret? You are all invited to come together with the Pentland Singers to sing songs by The Beatles! It only feels like yesterday that we sang Queen, and here we are inviting singers to join us again, this time to sing a collection of songs composed by members of The Beatles. Don’t worry if you don’t know your part – we can work it out! All you need is love for music and a willingness to sing! Remember, there is nothing you can sing that can’t be sung!
An afternoon rehearsal of a variety of Beatles music will be followed by a break with refreshments provided, and some time to socialise with the other singers, before a live performance in the early evening.
If you enjoy singing whilst having fun, this could be the event for you!
Please please me, and bring along a friend! Let it be a day to remember.
Time: 1.00 – 5.00. Venue: St Joseph’s Hall Price: £10.
Come and Hear – with a little help from their friends!
Come and hear the Pentland Singers perform music composed by the Beatles. The Choir will be joined by singers from here, there and everywhere who are looking for a bit of fun as well as a challenge in singing well known contemporary music scored for choirs.
The concert will be a bit of a magical mystery tour – it will include the fruits of the day’s labour with the Pentland Singers and friends performing a selection of Beatles songs learned and rehearsed earlier that day, and there will be some surprise guest performances including those from our very own Ailsa Aitkenhead and Jessica Leary. With free after-performance refreshments, it promises to be a night to remember. There will be something for everyone, and if you want to twist and shout as we sing, well I imagine that will be fine.
Time: 6.00 – 8.00. Venue: St Joseph’s Hall Price: £5 per adult, £3 per child.
